The sound of a square

When: 15:45 - 16:30

Where:
BASE Spazio B

Research and practice on music technologies are expanding from the artistic field to the exploration of new frontiers of human cognition. For long considered “emerging fields that never emerged”, sound studies and technologies have been constantly subjugated to the primacy of their visual competitors, associated with emotion and subjectivity as against the objectivity and rationality of the vision. But this status is changing since phenomena such as fake news and mass-cognitive biases made society disconnect from a common experience of reality.

The advancement of simulation and immersive technologies are offering to artists and technologists an alternative space for producing through sound of new forms of more relatable languages and collective experiences. Looking for “the sound of a square” represents an artistic as well as technology-driven intention of translating knowledge, consciousness and spatial perception of our world into a collective sound-driven experience. How different artists’ identities and technological approaches translate this “intention” into artworks? What kind of new immersive experiences can be created? Are we witnessing the begin of a post-visual new auditory paradigm? We will unfold these topics through a conversation with a London-based artist in residence at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the founder of the immersive venue for spatial sound MONOM in Berlin and a Milan-based artist who in the last three years teamed up with the “NESS – Next Generation Sound Synthesis” Edinburgh-based scientists group.
