Mauro Pagani

Born in Chiari (Brescia) on 5 February 1946, he is a musician, composer and producer and one of the five founders of the Premiata Forneria Marconi (1970). He has released three solo albums: Mauro Pagani (1978), Passa la bellezza (1991, winner of the Tenco Prize), Domani (2003, Tenco winner and best Italian album for La Stampa). For Gabriele Salvatores he made the music for Sogno di una notte d’estate (1983), Puerto Escondido (1992), Nirvana (1997, nominated for the David di Donatello), Educazione siberiana (2013, Ciak d’Oro, two David di Donatello nominations). In 1998 he founded the recording studios Officine Meccaniche (later a record label), and from 2000 to 2007 he was the Artisitc Director of Estate Fiorentina. Starting in 2001 he spent over ten years organising the summer culture festival Città Aromatica in Siena in his capacity as Artistic Director. He was an invaluable collaborator of Fabrizio de André: together they wrote Crêuza de Mä (1984), the best Italian album of the eighties, included in David Byrne’s ten most important albums of the decade in the world (later rearranged by Pagani in 2004 and remixed in 2014), Le Nuvole (1990) and the 1991 live concerts (both albums of the year). In 2009 he published his first novel Foto di gruppo con chitarrista (Rizzoli) which received considerable critical acclaim. He produces albums for many Italian artists including Massimo Ranieri, Nina Zilli, Arisa, and Chiara and boasts numerous collaborations with Demetrio Stratos, Gianna Nannini, Ligabue, Morgan, and Vasco Rossi. He was the music director for the Festival di Sanremo (2013 and 2014) and in 2015 he served as Artistic Director for the Area Sanremo event. In 2017 he composed the soundtrack and wrote the songs for Riccardo va all’inferno, Roberta Torre’s dark musical featuring Massimo Ranieri in the lead role.
